After months of delay, the Facebook group Meta now wants to introduce its AI functions in the EU. As a first step, a chatbot with artificial intelligence will be available in six European languages, as Meta announced.
Over time, the aim is to achieve the same range of functions as in the USA, according to a blog post. A timeframe for this was not specified.
Meta AI was launched in the USA in 2023. In the European Union, the company suffered a setback last year: the responsible Irish data protection authority objected to the use of publicly accessible posts on Facebook and Instagram to train the AI. Chatbots with artificial intelligence are fed huge amounts of information to train them. At the time, Meta argued that the use of posts from the EU would better prepare the AI for the conditions in Europe.
The chat assistant will be introduced free of charge across various apps of the Group. Meta also includes the messaging services WhatsApp and Messenger. The launch in 41 European countries is set to begin this week.
In the USA, as part of Meta AI, a so-called multimodal AI is also available on the Group’s networked glasses, which can process visual information and speech. The glasses frame has a camera – and users can ask the AI questions about what they are looking at.
