The release of Apple’s first wave of AI features is imminent. According to a report by renowned insider Mark Gurman in Bloomberg’s “Power On” newsletter, the first Apple Intelligence features will be released for the iPhone on October 28.

Apple Intelligence will be available as part of iOS 18.1, but initially only on a select few of the best iPhones, including the iPhone 16 series as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Unfortunately, owners of the regular iPhone 15 will miss out.

However, October 28 only marks the starting point for Apple’s AI launch. The first Apple Intelligence functions include Writing Tools for proofreading and rephrasing texts, Smart Replies for quick responses to messages, Notification Summaries, a clean-up function in the Photos app, and a redesign of Apple’s voice assistant Siri.

Further features such as the integration of ChatGPT, Genmoji, and Image Playground are set to follow before the end of the year with iOS 18.2. Siri’s major Apple Intelligence update is then planned for March 2025.

Apple’s approach of gradually introducing AI functions has not met with universal approval. The reason: the company is already making bold statements in its marketing for the iPhone 16 series, praising the devices as the “first iPhones designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence”. However, their devices will be on the market for quite some time before customers can actually use the new AI capabilities. This fact raises eyebrows in view of Apple’s massive marketing focus on the AI features.

Whether and when the AI features will also be available in the EU is still unclear.
