Apple is apparently working on a comprehensive modernization of its operating systems that will permanently change the design and operation of the iPhone, iPad and Mac. The planned update, which could still be released in 2025, promises a fresh look and an optimized user experience across all device classes.
According to insider information published by the renowned Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the new versions have the internal names “Luck” (for iOS 19 and iPadOS 19) and “Cheer” (for macOS 16). Apple has not yet officially confirmed the plans. The aim is to simplify operation and increase consistency between the platforms with a new design approach.
More harmony in the ecosystem
The differences between the current operating systems – for example in the design of apps, icons or windows – are to be reduced. Currently, iOS, macOS and visionOS sometimes appear to be from different worlds, which makes it difficult for users to switch between devices. Apple has been inspired by visionOS in particular, which features round icons and a three-dimensional interface, even if not all elements can be transferred to flat screens. Despite weak sales figures for the Vision Pro, its software seems to have served as a testing ground for new ideas.
Separate paths instead of a merger
Unlike some of its competitors, who are unifying their systems, Apple is keeping its operating systems separate. This strategy is intended to ensure that each device is optimally tailored to its use – and at the same time encourage customers to purchase multiple Apple products.
Behind the project is Alan Dye, an experienced Apple manager who has already played a key role in the Apple Watch and iOS 7. Since the departure of design icon Jony Ive in 2019, Dye has assumed responsibility for a team of over 300 designers. The overhaul is considered one of the department’s biggest projects and is intended to bring Apple’s software back to the forefront of innovation.
Reaction to stagnating sales
The innovations come at a critical time: after a phase of moderate growth and a surprising decline in iPhone sales in the 2024 Christmas season, Apple is looking for ways to revive demand. Although business was good in the first quarter of 2025 thanks to services and Apple Intelligence, the iPhone as the main revenue driver needs a breath of fresh air.
Unveiling expected in summer
The new software versions are likely to take center stage at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2025. Apple hopes that this step will not only win over existing customers, but also attract new users to its own ecosystem.
