ChatGPT has taken the world by storm. But its success has come at a price – and this could soon increase significantly for users. Internal documents from the developer OpenAI point to significant price increases in the coming years.

Gradual price adjustment planned

According to a report in the New York Times, which cites confidential documents, OpenAI is planning a gradual increase in subscription costs. According to the report, the price for ChatGPT Plus will rise from the current 20 US dollars per month to 22 US dollars by the end of 2024. The real surprise, however, lies in the longer-term planning: OpenAI plans to increase the monthly price to 44 US dollars by 2029. This doubling of the price within five years clearly shows the financial pressure the company is under.

Reasons for the price increase

Despite impressive sales figures – in August 2024, OpenAI achieved a monthly turnover of 300 million US dollars – the company is in the red. A loss of around 5 billion US dollars is expected for the current year. The reasons for this are complex: high personnel costs, expensive office rents and, above all, enormous expenditure on AI training infrastructure are weighing on the balance sheet. The operation of ChatGPT alone is said to have cost OpenAI 700,000 US dollars per day at times.
