OpenAI has declared in court that it is interested in buying the Chrome browser if Google is forced to sell it. The head of product at ChatGPT, Nick Turley, made this sOpenAI has expressed interest in court about purchasing the Chrome browser should Google be forced to divest it.
ChatGPT’s Product Chief, Nick Turley, made this statement before a judge, as reported by Reuters.
Nick Turley, Product Manager at ChatGPT, explained in his testimony that OpenAI would see strategic advantages in acquiring the market-leading browser. The statement was made during a hearing on possible consequences from last year’s ruling, in which Judge Amit Mehta determined that Google held a monopolistic position in the search market.
The demand for breaking up Google is at the center of measures proposed by the US Department of Justice. As expected, Google announced it would appeal the ruling and is fighting against any divestiture plans.
Interestingly, Turley also revealed that OpenAI had previously sought contact with Google. The AI company wanted to negotiate a technology partnership to integrate Google search into ChatGPT – an endeavor that was rejected by Google. “We believe that with multiple partners and particularly with Google’s API, we can offer users a better product,” Turley stated in court.
Although OpenAI already cooperates with Microsoft’s search engine Bing, Turley indicated that this partnership does not meet all expectations. Court documents mention “significant quality issues” with an unnamed “Provider No. 1.”
The AI specialist is simultaneously working on its own search solution, though its development is progressing more slowly than initially planned. The original goal of processing about 80 percent of ChatGPT search queries through its own index by the end of 2025 has now been significantly postponed.
