Meta is apparently working on its own search engine supported by artificial intelligence (AI). The project aims to reduce the group’s dependence on the services of competitors Google and Microsoft.
As the technology portal “The Information” reports, citing people familiar with the matter, the planned search engine will in particular enable AI-supported summaries of current events and be integrated into Meta’s own AI chatbot. Until now, the Meta AI bot embedded in Instagram and Facebook has relied on Google and Microsoft Bing services for questions about current news and events.
The first signs of the Group’s independent ambitions became apparent a few months ago when Meta’s own web crawler was observed searching the internet. According to information from company circles, a team has been working on building an information database for the in-house chatbot for around eight months. At the same time, Meta has intensified its efforts to build a localization service that competes with Google Maps.
This development is part of a broader trend: Apple is also said to have the necessary tools for an AI-supported replacement for Google search, as the business magazine “Bloomberg” recently analyzed using the example of app store search tools.
The development of proprietary AI-supported search engines is currently a trend in the technology industry. The AI company OpenAI has confirmed that it is working on a search engine called SearchGPT. At the same time, the AI search engine operator Perplexity is making a name for itself in the industry.
