OpenAI is adding a task function to ChatGPT that allows users to schedule reminders and regular requests. The new function will initially be rolled out in beta status for Plus, Team and Pro users.
With the introduction of the task function, OpenAI is responding to a frequently requested functionality that was previously only known from classic digital assistants such as Siri or Alexa. Unlike these, however, ChatGPT can take on much more complex tasks.
Versatile application possibilities
The new function allows users, for example, to be reminded of important appointments or to request regular information such as the weather forecast.
The system’s ability to process and prepare context-related and personalized information is remarkable. This goes far beyond the possibilities of previous reminder functions.
First step towards AI agents
The implementation of tasks is seen as OpenAI’s first step towards autonomous AI agents. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had already announced that 2025 would be an important year for AI agents, which he believes will “enter the world of work”.
The function is accessible via a drop-down menu in ChatGPT and can be managed both via Chat and via a dedicated task manager in the web interface. During the beta phase, the function is not available in the free version and not in Advanced Voice Mode.
Despite the extended functions, there are clear limitations: ChatGPT can search the web at set times, but does not carry out continuous monitoring and cannot make purchases.
According to media reports, OpenAI is already planning to introduce further agent systems. A system known as “Operator” should be able to write code and book trips. The launch is expected in the coming weeks.
