For a long time, third-party providers such as 1Password and LastPass dominated the password manager market. Now Apple wants to enter the market with its own in-house solution.

According to internal information obtained by the renowned Apple expert Mark Gurman, the technology giant is planning to introduce a completely new password app. This is to be called “Passwords” and will debut with the next operating system updates for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

The innovation promises to simplify the handling of access data on Apple devices considerably. So far, passwords can be managed in the iCloud keychain, but many users find this system opaque. An independent app could provide a remedy.

According to reports, “Passwords” will offer important functions: From importing existing password databases to categorization in clear lists and the integration of two-factor authentication, everything is included. The prospect of cross-platform support for Windows PCs and Apple’s future VR glasses Vision Pro is particularly exciting.

The Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10 will provide the first official insight.
