More and more free file converters on the Internet are turning out to be treacherous traps. The FBI warns of manipulated online tools that not only convert files, but also smuggle malware or even ransomware onto victims’ computers. Converters for documents, music files and file mergers are particularly affected.

Hidden danger: malware in the converted files

According to the FBI report, the fake programs do what they promise – but with a malicious side effect. The criminals embed malware in the distributed files in order to gain access to networks. They also search uploaded documents for sensitive information such as passwords, bank details or cryptocurrencies.

Cunning scam: imitation websites

The method used by scam sites to disguise themselves is particularly insidious. They mimic legitimate services, often with minimal differences in the URL that are barely noticeable at first glance. Many victims come across these fake sites through Google searches – including paid ads that place fraudulent services at the top of the search results.

Security researchers sound the alarm

Back in November 2024, a cybersecurity expert uncovered a Google advertising campaign promoting fake file converters. Instead of genuine conversions, users downloaded the Gootloader malware unnoticed – hidden in seemingly harmless ZIP files. Once executed, the malware was able to infiltrate networks undetected and be used for attacks.

How to protect yourself from the wrong tools

To avoid falling victim to this scam, you should take a few safety precautions before using a file converter:

  • Use reputable providers: Give preference to well-known websites with positive reviews.
  • Check the URL carefully: Even small deviations in the address can indicate fraud.
  • Check files after downloading: Unexpected ZIP files or unknown file formats are a warning signal.
  • Use anti-virus software: Up-to-date protection can detect suspicious downloads.
  • Consider alternatives: Many programs such as Microsoft Word already offer integrated file conversion functions.

If you want to be on the safe side, you should view free online tools with skepticism and inform yourself thoroughly before using them. Because a supposedly practical service can conceal a dangerous threat.
