A new survey by cloud computing company Civo shows that more than half of VMware customers are considering switching.

The study provides remarkable insights into current trends among VMware users. More than half of the customers surveyed, 51.9% to be precise, are seriously considering leaving the VMware platform. For many companies, these considerations are already turning into concrete actions: Almost half of respondents, 48.7%, are actively looking at alternative cloud providers. The growing appeal of open source solutions is particularly interesting. Almost 45% of study participants are considering migrating to such open systems, which indicates a growing interest in flexible and potentially more cost-effective alternatives.

Reasons for wanting to change

The study, which was presented during the Civo Navigate conference, comes nine months after the acquisition of VMware by Broadcom. Many customers are unsure about changes to their license agreements and the potential impact on their bills.

Open source solutions are gaining traction, mainly due to their simplicity and consistent pricing. Two of the top three priorities for companies looking for new providers are flexibility and fair and transparent pricing – both typical features of open source offerings.

Despite the growing interest, there are still reservations:

Comment from the expert

Henry Godwin, VP of Global Sales at Civo, explains: “Over the last nine months we have heard from many concerned VMware customers. At the end of the day, companies want certainty. They can’t stay in a situation where prices are skyrocketing without the service improving in parallel.”

Godwin emphasizes that providers must respond to evolving customer needs. It is not enough to simply offer cost-effective solutions. Rather, they must also convince in terms of security, support and reliability. The study shows that companies place great importance on simplicity, predictability and comprehensive support when choosing their next cloud provider.
