South Korean electronics giant Samsung is mourning the loss of its co-CEO Han Jong-hee. As announced by the company on Tuesday. The 63-year-old business leader died following a heart attack.
At the technology powerhouse, Han was responsible for both the digital appliances business and the Device Experience division, which encompasses the lucrative mobile phones and smart home sectors.
His career at the world’s largest memory chip and smartphone manufacturer began back in 1988. The executive played a particularly formative role in developing Samsung’s television business. In 2011, Han took over leadership of product development in the display division before rising to the company’s highest management level in 2022.
Just a week ago, Han was in the spotlight when he had to answer critical questions about Samsung’s stock performance at the shareholders’ meeting in Suwon.
Following Han’s death, Jun Young-hyun, who was only appointed co-CEO last November, will take over sole leadership. As part of a larger management restructuring, Samsung had already responded to intense competition in the chip business in late 2023 by entrusting Jun with leading the strategically important memory chip division.
