Datadog, a platform for monitoring and security of cloud applications, has announced the acquisition of Metaplane – a provider of data observability.

Focus on data quality throughout the stack

Metaplane specializes in the observability of data along the entire data flow. The platform works with machine learning and analyzes data down to column level. The aim is to identify data quality problems at an early stage, rectify them and prevent them before they manifest themselves in central data pools such as data lakes or warehouses.

Traditional monitoring tools usually start too late: “They only detect problems after data has ended up in data lakes or warehouses.” This can have significant consequences, especially in automated decision-making processes and AI applications, where timeliness and accuracy are crucial.

Integration should enable real-time transparency

By integrating Metaplane, Datadog plans to create an end-to-end view of the data lifecycle – from origin to processing to use. This should enable data teams to monitor and control data flows in real time.

With the acquisition of Metaplane, Datadog is expanding its data observability division in a targeted manner and positioning itself more strongly in the area of data-driven corporate management. The expansion of functions – including in areas such as data jobs monitoring and data streams monitoring – underlines the strategic course of providing a comprehensive platform for data and application monitoring.
