Apple is opening up its Apple TV+ streaming service for a free weekend for the first time. From January 3 to 5, interested parties can access the entire media library without a subscription, as the company announced on Monday.
Users only need an Apple ID to be able to use the offer on all compatible devices. A credit card or other payment information is not required.
The timing of the promotion seems well thought out: the eagerly awaited second season of the successful series “Severance” starts on January 17. The free weekend gives potential subscribers the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the first season before it starts.
Technical details and availability
Access is via the Apple TV app, which is available on a variety of platforms – from iOS devices to smart TVs and streaming sticks. The streaming quality corresponds to the regular offering with 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos, provided the devices used support this.
The regular service costs 9.99 dollars per month and allows simultaneous use for up to six family members via Family Sharing. With the free promotion, Apple is obviously pursuing the goal of increasing the reach of its streaming service and attracting new subscribers.
The opening up of the offering could also be seen as a reaction to the increasing competitive pressure in the streaming market. Although Apple TV+ has a smaller content offering than the competition, it is increasingly focusing on high-quality in-house productions such as “Ted Lasso” or “The Morning Show”.
The temporary opening of the service is an interesting test to see whether Apple can tap into new target groups. For those interested, the weekend offers the opportunity to view and evaluate the entire service without risk.
