AMD acquires “largest European AI lab” Silo AI

US chip manufacturer AMD has announced the acquisition of Silo AI, which the company describes as “Europe’s largest private AI lab.” The purchase price for the Helsinki-based company is approximately 665 million US dollars.

With this acquisition, AMD aims to further strengthen its position in the growing artificial intelligence market. Silo AI brings a team of top-tier AI scientists and engineers with extensive experience in developing customized AI models, platforms, and solutions.

Peter Sarlin, CEO and co-founder of Silo AI, will continue to lead the company after the acquisition and will report to Vamsi Boppana, Senior Vice President of the AMD Artificial Intelligence Group. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2024.

AMD hopes that the acquisition will accelerate its AI strategy and improve the development and faster implementation of AI solutions for customers worldwide. Silo AI specializes in developing AI-powered solutions designed to help companies quickly and easily integrate AI into their products, services, and processes.

Silo AI’s customers include companies such as Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever. Additionally, the company develops open-source language models like Poro and Viking on AMD platforms.

The acquisition of Silo AI is part of a series of acquisitions and investments AMD has made to support its AI strategy. In the last 12 months, the company invested over 125 million dollars in a dozen AI companies and also acquired Mipsology and Nod.ai.
